How do you find a gradient on a contour map?

I need the most simplest chewed out answer if possible. On my map I am given the difference in elevation, and I can estimate the horizontal difference between two points. How do I calculate this in simplest form? Thank youHow do you find a gradient on a contour map?

Divide the difference in height by difference in horizontal displacement





This will give you the ratio, anyway.
